There isn't anything much better than a nice breeze on a summer day. The sun is beating down on your skin, and then that friendly pal Wind comes in to cool you down.
Until that same wind picks up and carries your outdoor furniture into the side of your house, taking out a few windows as it goes.
Don't Be Fooled
Many homeowners forget to think about the damaging effects that both wind and hail can have on their home. The severity of these events are "less scary" in comparison to tornadoes and lightning storms, and are usually overlooked in the insurance process. Living in Kansas especially, this could be a detrimental mistake. Wind and hail storms have the potential to be just as damaging. Data from the Insurance Information Institute showed that 46% of claims in 2011 were a result of wind or hail. So...how do you protect your property?
Many insurers have added a new standard for home insurance policies in the form of wind/hail deductibles. This deductible is an amount dictated by your provider that is completely independent of your regular homeowner deductible. The two ways that wind/hail deductibles are determined is by a flat rate deductible per claim, or a percentage of the overall home insurance coverage. For instance, an individual with a overall coverage of $500,000 paying a 1% deductible will pay a $5,000 deductible for wind/hail specific damage. This percentage could range from anywhere between 1% and 5% depending on your provider, which can make a huge difference in whether or not you choose to file a claim. If you have the 1% ($5,000) deductible, and the damage done is $15,000, it makes sense to file. However, if your deductible percentage is at 5% ($25,000), then you may not take the same approach. Are you familiar with your wind/hail policy?
Unfortunately, no matter what you do, you can not stop the elements from wrecking havoc on your property. However, you can be prepared when the unavoidable happens. Be sure that you know your policy and ask your agent specific questions regarding said policy. There's no better time than June in Kansas to ask about wind and hail deductibles. Don't wait until it's too late!!
